Probably unnecessarily, we had cable put in the upstairs rooms last week. (Mostly it's for insomnia sufferers, of which we have several.) So for the first few days, I was very interested. I kept turning on the set, as though we had DIFFERENT cable in the upstairs rooms -- you know, not like the cable we have in the living room which we never watch. I have discovered, much to my surprise, that really there's not much to watch. Weirdly, this doesn't really stop me. But the novelty is wearing off. Current Mood: curious |

Sitting on my branch I seem to be eating the same diet as a... gibbon. Gibbons are frugivores and prefer ripe, pulpy, and sugary fruits. While fruit makes up 50 to 60 percent of the gibbon diet, figs (a preferred food), leaves, twigs, shoots, flowers, and occasionally bird eggs and insects are also part of the gibbon diet.
If you substitute beans for insects, that is. Current Mood: accomplished |

WSOP 2008 Main Event Roto So tonight at the dinner celebrating my roommate Ryan's second 7-stud-hilo bracelet*, we decided to have a roto for the main event. Bet is to have the highest finisher. Each player had ten picks and one woman as well as themselves.

Devon, read these! We have a friend who is doing some commuting and has asked me for science fiction and fantasy recommendations -- specifically for someone who has not read a lot of speculative fiction. Here are some of mine. They are not a top ten list or a best of or anything like that. They are just ones I have loved or found interesting or even ones that I think are "important" to the genres. In no particular order: 1. Dune (Herbert) 2. The Handmaid's Tale (Atwood) 3. Stranger in a Strange Land (my hero, Heinlein) 4. Ender's Game/Speaker for the Dead (Card) 5. The Gate to Women's Country (Tepper) 6. Cryptonomicon (Neil Stephenson) 7. A Spell for Chameleon (Anthony) (yeah, yeah, but you don't have to read the OTHER 57) 8. Foundation (Asimov) is probably important enough to give a read -- I have not read it in forever, but it is part of my brain DNA. 9. Harry Potter (Rowling) 10. The Hobbit, LOTR, Tolkien. Egad, I temporarily forgot Tolkien. 11. The Liveship trilogy (Hobb) 12. A Wrinkle in Time 13. Doomsday Book (Willis) is always in my top 20 or so. I have read it many times. I will add others as I think of them. Recommendations/reminders are welcome. Edited to add: Anything after number 9. Everything on this list has been read at least twice by me; several have been read many more times than that. Current Mood: dorky |

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 2: Oh, The Humanity It turns out that I am at about the best table I've been at all Series, on a day 2, with chips, in a game I'm pretty good at. I mean it was like the home games in college. Seriously. AND we were the last table to break. Never had a chance. Went from 15000 to 25000 the first 90 minutes and from 25000 to 0 in the next twenty minutes. One hand, an opponent and I went five bets with a straight-6 (him) vs a straight-7 (me) with a dead 7 and 8, and no dead aces or deuces. He had no clue what kind of trouble his hand was in. http://twodimes.net/h/?z=4859234

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 2 Table Here's my table: (Table 32) Jim Geary 15,300 Craig Gray 11,500 Ron Long 5,800 Michael Gisondi 13,700 Rajiv Khanna 12,100 David Daneshgar 8,600 David Miara 16,800 Ryan Dreyer 28,900 Don't know a single guy, not that that means anything. At my table last night, the only guys I knew were DonZ and David Singer, but everyone else seemed pretty good, too. Looked like there was some deader money out there; hope I can find it. http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/tourney/tournament-chip-counts.asp?tid=4941&grid=411 |

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 1 Day 1 went pretty well. I was probably chip leader from hours 4 to 6. Didn't drag anything from 6 to 8 and ended the day with a mere $15300, slightly above mean, and a bit above median I'd imagine. Some really bad players visited my table, before eventually being replaced by pretty good players. Looking forward to the scramble. 117 of 543 remain. They pay 56, but I'm shooting for 57th so Prock doesn't call me a farmer again and make me cry. Play resumes @ 3pm tomorrow. http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/tourney/tournament-chip-counts.asp?tid=4941&grid=411 |

miscellany I may be the type of person who needs a spare room. By spare room I mean: place for things that are miscellaneous. If I have 12 rooms and they are all "real" rooms I don't stay as organized as if I have four rooms, one of which is for storage only. Maybe this is a disorder. I'm organized, quite, in my own way. *** This has been a great day. I'm relaxed and happy and tired. Current Mood: calm |

2008 WSOP Event 43 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low I ended up 15th out of 720 for $9828. I never had many chips, but I didn't spew with a bad hand just because I was short. The lack of antes in Omaha allows one to pick their spots more selectively than in Holdem. I looked like an uber-nit farming into 15th for the extra 2k, but I was trying to win the tournament. I just decided that the best way for me to win the tournament wasn't to put the last of my chips in from the big blind with QJ55-b getting 2:1. I was card-dead the entire second day. It's weird I made it anywhere near the final table.
I'm heading to the Rio now for the $1500 8-or-better stud. I seem to do well in these tourneys. I think I might know what I'm doing.

We're doing kind of a "detox" plan here. I'm not sure what we are detoxing against, because we are sort of clean livers. We have clean livers. The plan involves a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and alternative protein sources, mostly beans, eggs, and dairy, but I wouldn't call it vegetarian. We are just doing ... simple foods. However, I have decided to also completely give up mammal foods from now on. I have been thinking of doing this for years; our detoxing, the environment, and animal behavior studies that we have recently been reading all point me to the conclusion that -- at least for now -- mammals are not on my menu. I'm sure my family is watching me with narrowed eyes, wondering what new wacky thing I'll come up with. Current Mood: cheerful |

We all just found out that Curie's sibling probably has fanconi. This is very sad for those of us who know and love Pippin. He is a gentleman basenji and one of the first dogs I ever fell in love with. Apparently the fanconi protocol can be quite successful and Pippin may very well have a long and happier life. (He has been pretty miserable lately.) Right now, we don't know what this means for Curie. You know, I love this little dog. She is my pal. She is interesting and interested in life, particularly life outside the sliding glass doors, particularly squirrels, and she is funny and kind. She loves teenaged boys and young men. She LOVES the pizza guy. If she could write, she would doodle his name on her notebooks. She can't make a lot of decisions for herself. Cars baffle her. She would wander the middles of streets if I didn't stop her from doing so. She would eat pizza instead of the right foods any day. But she is a little person in some of the important ways. She does decide some things -- not philosophically, not with grand lists, but little peaceful ways that make living in this family just a little bit better. So when I consider a step like spaying, I don't consider it lightly, because she is not an object or a possession to be made convenient. I'm sad that we will likely have to go ahead and have her spayed, because fanconi is a disease that we should not pass on. I am sad for me, too, because I think her babies would be wonderful. Humans are not so far from the other animals. We don't have a monopoly on thinking and feeling, just because we do them (usually) better. I'm sure I sound like a weenie, but that's fine. Gay Dates for Straight Guys So last night jorj95 and I ended up getting out of the house and getting dinner. We're driving around LV and all of a sudden I see X. me: "Cool, let's stop!" jorj: "That is so gay." me: "What? We saw Garden State together; what's the big deal? jorj: "On the 1-10 gay scale, seeing Garden State was a 7. X is a 14." Solve for X.
We have a winner. Feel free to guess and then compare your answer with the correct one.NB: Even though we didn't actually go to X, the waitress must've picked something up, because she was asking us how we met, etc... |

No, shit piss fuck motherfucking goddammit, no! May 12, 1937 -- June 22, 2008, George Carlin. I'm gonna miss that brilliant cocksucker even more than Russert. They say celebrities seem to die in threes and sure enough, this completes an interesting trio, Russert, Cyd Charisse (one of the most amazingly beautiful women I've ever seen for several decades), and now dear George within 10 days. Carlin saw the truth in every issue and no matter how angry it made him, he could still make it fall-on-the-floor funny. Thanks for having been here. |

2008 WSOP Events 38, 38.5, 39 Event 38, $2000 Pot-Limit Holdem Um, I played a hand or two, I lost, I left.
Event 38.5, $2250 HORSE Satellite Er, I didn't leave the building, I got some lunch and stuck around for the 5pm Satellite for the 50k HORSE. Whereas the last time I played I had a starting table with players who couldn't read their Omaha hands, this time I had Mike Wattel and Mark Gregorich. Whereas the last one I played I had guys who thought you could double-bet the paired door card in 8 or better, this time I had Mike Sexton. Whereas the last one I played I had guys who check-folded every Hold'em pot, this time I had Carlos Mortensen. 38 players in the field, but at least as many bracelets. Still, I was able to extract bunches of chips from the nonsuperstars. Once the limits went up, though, I kept getting myself into marginal stud situations and aborting chips. I went from $15,000 to $2000 in about 5 hands. Then we broke to two tables and I found myself back in the Elysian Fields of dingdongs. Unfortunately, I left all my chips back at Hell's Kitchen. This might've been a meta-game error. I always try to focus on playing the next hand the best I can, but perhaps I should have tightened up a little and rolled the dice on the redraw. A couple doubles and an IGHN.
Event 39, $1500 No-Limit Holdem aka the Uber-donkament. I had a great starting table and never an opportunity to do anything. I'm leery of manufacturing opportunities when there are no antes, but then on the break I have Bill Chen explaining why he potted the field with 63o. (But he wouldn't have with 62o. Seriously.) Anyway, I dwindle, double to original and then this hand occurs. Blinds are 100-200 with 25 ante. I raise with KJs. Big blind (a definite amateur) defends. Flop is J42 all clubs. Check Check. Turn is the J of spades. I bet $1200. He calls. River comes down. I don't look, just look at him. Finally he checks and I see the 3 of clubs, and check disgustedly. He shows the Ac4d and says I thought you were gonna go all in there. Uh, yeah. I jam my next pair but an ace hits. I was there almost four hours (surviving half the field), and felt like I hardly played any poker at all.
Tomorrow's Triple-Draw tourney will at least give me a chance to rumble and spew.
