Article about 3 Cups of Tea jigsawn made reference to Greg Mortensons's book, "3 Cups of Tea" in a comment on wisemonkey 's list of books. This is an article in last week's Christian Science Monitor about the impact of his book on the U.S. military in Afghanistan: Our Military Guys are Reading His BookI'd been figuring most of his schools in Pakistan were destroyed by the Taliban but the news is much better. Have ordered his new book, haven't read it yet. |

this is why I love Scrabble
Bob Linn beat me at club last night with a nice play of GANGLIAL late in a tie game. GANGLIA, which also takes the back R, is a plural of GANGLION, a group of nerve cells. GANGLIONS is also an acceptable plural and has a very cool anagram. |

we haz phoenix collins division; looking into future...
i am pleased to confirm that phoenix has attracted 8 confirmed entries, minimum req'd for a Go. 8 people paying $120, and traveling distances. multiday event. established event (1/4 century). this is huge. planning forward, ardencup politely declined a collins div, tho they patiently listened to my repeated pitches in multiple emails. but they hinted they'd do it in 2011. now, we need one more director to add collins div. which tourney would y'all sowpodsers most likely to attend in the summer of this year, in usa/canada? please respond asap so i can start making pitches, offering bribes, hinting at my mafia connexions, etc. dielle, hlady could you forward this to dean? wisemonkey, to olaf, and others to anyone else who might be interested like travis, amit, polatnick, lipton et al. thankyou. sam k |

albany
i was playing well at the beginning, but had a tough run and then blew some games late in the tournament due to fatigue and apathy. i had more than a few games from hell, but overall i wasn't exactly blameless. one of the most exhausting things ever is to put so much concentration into playing great for almost the whole game, and then make one bad move that gets punished exorbitantly. ah, if i were disciplined i could have finished middling instead of had a scrabble disaster. strangely, i don't hate scrabble anymore, though. going to albany actually cheered me up. i had lots of fun even eight inches down the standings in upstate new york in january. especially fun was seeing so many of you again, nye, indian/mexican food, my roomies, and JC's excellent trivia soiree with my kickass team. i do want to play more but probably won't until the BAT. we also hope to go to oregon tile, arden cup and nationals. in the last few months i have even managed to build in a relatively effortless 30 minutes of study time daily (on the train to work with olaugh). i know i'm not very good but somehow still hope my breakout is just around the corner. it's the same irrational optimism that gets us through life, i suppose. |

Top Players + Contenders
Some years ago, i posted a kinda top 10 list of scrabble players. it wuzz so much easier 2 do THEN cuz da skill lines of demarcation wuzz clear 2 a serious student of da game. Now, da lines izz obscured 4 eitha student or teacher. juss as studying wordlists create gaps in word knowledge, quackle izz creating gaps in gameplay skillz. i always graded players by whodafuck izz/would b da HARDEST 2 beat inna session (dess part of WHY i always thought so highly of Wiegand--i thought he would b harder 2 beat den Capp or Adam). TIME, more den anything else, closed a gap in skill level at da top. Edley n Tiekert izz OLD as Lester. Geary playin cards, Trey ticklin ivory, Matt MI, Capp been gone more denna minnit, n Samson FINALLY noddin respectfully 2 Father Time--muhfuckaz got old n some got wise. a good number of great players still compete, but da fucked up structure detract from da PURITY of da competition (but dess always been da case). i'm certainly not now inna position 2 definitiely declare who get down how n who fakin da funk--i can only go by what i seen have seen. of da younger players, i'm mostly impressed by Conrad (a muhfucka dat DON'T smoke got da MOST potential). Rafi got his seasonin last year n Dayton n dat'll help him if he learn from it. of da generation next players (21st century origins), i always thought Kenji wuzz da best of dat bunch, hopefully he won't go COMPLETELY insane. i don't know enuf about Carl's game 2 grade his skill level, i'd give him a seat at da table juss 2c what he brought wif him. Orry got my attention at an anagrammin session (he found SUMPN long n i asked him whodafuck wuzz HE)--assumin his name DON'T belong up here, he might turn out 2b da best of da bunch. Bradley n Doug got game, Thevenot got da most potential altho COLLINS (da time n energy spent) izz gonna fuck him up on dhis side. i'm REALLY impressed by Will Anderson--he posted a game wif Wapnick dat showed how he do (he made EVERY play he HAD 2 make--n if he had 15 minutes goin in2 da endgame, HE got da most potential). Brian Bowman izz also exceptional. Real life interceded on Stefan (RAU, morons)--else HE could easily topped da list. obv, JKB n Olaf make da grade (but i STILL say Kenji izz betta den both of dem). Dean n Dielle would b great players if dey lived n Babylon AND aint do shit but play scrabble. oh shit, i 4got Rob Robinsky--now dess who CLEARLY got da MOST potential. His understanding of da game izz 2nd 2 NONE among his peers. iss a lotta good players--some wif da potential 2 achieve greatness n 1 or 2 who could possibly b among da best EVVA. issa shame it aint no incentive 2 bcome a great player--whoevva crazy enuf 2 walk cross dem coals, izz juss fuckin crazy... |

tournament game #2878 Albany round 1Happy 2010 everybody! Game of the day returns, with a few changes to past game of the days. First of all, you'll notice that the game # is considerably higher than it was before. I've changed the NASPA game # to my overall tournament game # (and have done so for all previous games posted). Also, I am now including a board diagram of each game and the list of plays, for those who don't have the time to go move by move. Enjoy! Play the game( Read more ) |

Reprinting an Email from The Phenomenon
Since this was posted to "world scrabble" it's hardly confidential. There's no dearth of witty & talented writers among the North American Scrabblers, but we don't use phrases such as "unfold like the petals of a chrysanthemum". I have not met the spirited & confident writer, Phillip Edwin-Mugisha, who represented Uganda at Worlds. Perhaps it'll amuse some of you who aren't on the world Scrabble listserv. **************************************** ************** Hi folks Many of my die hard fans have been rightly wondering, but where did the face of the game disappear to? Well, bearing in mind that I am carrying our beloved global game on my shoulders, I spent the festive season seriously poring over the Collins dictionary. We also played the first East and Central African Scrabble Qualifier this past weekend in Mengo, a suburb of Kampala, generously hosted by the urbane Richard Rukwengye at Nakasero S. S. Who won this 18 game tournament? My dear reader, don't ask such a silly and obvious question. Here are the top three. (details omitted by Tolarjev) Alas, because I so busy acquiring the largest Scrabble vocabulary on earth (having decided the largest Scrabble vocabulary in Africa is not enough) I simply don't have time for a witty and engrossing game by game report, this time. NOTES - If I said this was a close nail biting affair, I would be a barefaced liar. I dominated this tournament from start to finish the way I am going to dominate events on the Ugandan and Worldwide Scrabble calendar for the rest of 2010. My 3 game margin of victory was historic for me. - That sperm count spread of +1 323 is another personal record! People should tremble in their boots. - This is my fifth victory in 46 tournaments since I started playing in October 2006. Yeah, yeah, I know. In need to work on my "strike rate." (Its lowered by the fact that I didn't win my first 17 Opens). In 2010 I will well and truly sort that out. -It also a first for me to start the year with a victory bang. -And carefully note the bingo average of nigh on 2 a game. I can sense the gooseflesh all over you arms! So there you go. This is what I call a shot across the bow. I intend to stride across my Scrabble Kingdom like a colossus in 2010! And you know what, you will have the privilege, a perfect ringside seat, to watch my genius unfold like the petals of a chrysanthemum. Therefore for you, my dear reader, it will be a guaranteed HAPPY NEW YEAR! Cheerio Phillip Edwin-Mugisha THE PHENOMENON SCRABBLE WORLD CHAMPION 2011 |

New Years Scrabble
Just got a text from spherulitic saying I was missed at the Fuze Box. Aww, glad to know that the peeps at Albany are thinking about me, and some of them even impersonating me, from what I hear. Woulda loved to be there with all of you, but my holiday season down here in Maryland has been great too, so no complaints. Today I got my Scrabble fix in at Dave Engelhardt's post-New Years Scrabble party and potluck. Nonstop Scrabble and tons of snackage from noon to midnight. Somehow even though I didn't make it until after two o'clock, I managed to get 15 games in. I guess I move fast. Things most definitely went my way, as my first two plays of DOUPIONI and ENTELLUS presaged. I went 13-2, +1667. Average game score 458-347. Of course I have a day like this when there is no cash nor rating on the line. :) A lot of big games and fancy legitimate words, but I mixed in a few phonies when I felt the time was right. When one player opened with TWIRL and I had a rack of AFLNNOV, my thoughts were, "Hm, there's FLAVONE and FLAVIN. I should probably play FLAVIN here through the I. Ooh, but FLAVONIN* sounds really plausible. I'll bet she'll buy that." I put it down and she glowed in response, "Nice play!" Then I drew LIVENED, so you know what I had to do on the next turn. Bam, LIVENED/FLAVONINE*. Again not even a hold. Next rack was AGNRSST and no legit bingo fit, so down STRANGS* went. She traded 7 and at this point I was up 224 to 70, without having made a single legitimate play. I thought for a moment about trying to play a phony on every single turn of the game. But the rest of my racks lent themselves too well to legitimate scoring plays. At one point I was up 438-171, but she hit two late bingos to make a respectable final score of 533-367. ( bingos ) |

It's been awhile!
I just realized that I didn't post a single thing on LJ in all of 2009 - and most of 2008! With all my other Internet addictions, something had to go, I guess. I do have to squeeze the work thing and the school thing and the being-a-parent thing into my schedule. I've been doing a crappy job of studying words lately, but I managed to hit my peak rating last year. And despite the fact that my kids are busier than ever with their own baseball/soccer/football/ballet games/performances, I managed to play in more tournaments than ever. (I will NOT be winning the coveted Mom of the Year award, of course.) I'm not sure when I'll post again, but I seem to keep up with everyone on Facebook these days, and now that I'm on Twitter (melirout - that's me!), there should be no event that slips by me unnoticed. Happy 2010, everybody! |

Ridiculously fun Quackle game
This was just an end of the night goofing-around game against Quackle. I was moving very quickly and not thinking very hard, so there was no attempt at super accurate play here. But some pretty cool stuff happened. Enjoy it! |

yawn, another food blog
over at chefmonkey.blogspot.com. all my kitchen blogging will move here from now on, so if you enjoy the recipes, please subscribe or visit from time to time. i've had my livejournal for over seven years, and while i like the social networking aspect, the functionality, look and user interface leave a lot to be desired. after four days of use, i'm much enjoying the clean simplicity of blogger and plan to post there every or nearly every day. the content won't be exclusively food-related, though much of it will document cooking and restaurant dining. i'll probably also write about things like books, news and travel, but scrabble content will remain over here.
