mini word lesson
A conversation about INFILL (adjective only in OWL, verb in CSW) at Sunday's tournament led me to look up inflections of INFALL. My portable electronic thingamabob told me that INFALL, INFALLS, and INFALLING were good, but not infell* nor infallen*. The doodad only gave me words, not dictionary entries, so I wondered to myself "what in the world is the past tense of INFALL?" It turns out there is none. INFALL is a noun and INFALLING is an adjective. This is also true in CSW, which includes a fun front hook for INFALL, a word I commonly heard in my youth while watching WWF on the tube. Addendum: Highlander fans will like another discovery from that day: QUICKENINGS#. |

thoughts on the Scrabble future
I'm glad I read this recent post by stmonday before writing my own: http://stmonday.livejournal.com/23718.htmlEven with that said, I was feeling right now that I would be able to handle life without Scrabble as well now as ever. Yes, I just wrote that sentence. I can't believe it either. Is this a sign of the apocalypse? As I was reading Brian's post, I was looking back on my own fond memories I've had while playing competitive Scrabble over the last 13 years. What really stood out in his post was him mentioning that Scrabble has been better than any therapy, and how he's gotten over his social anxiety, because I can totally relate to that. I'm shy enough today, but I would hardly utter a word to anyone when I first started. After a rather forgettable first tournament, I met many of the legends at the 1997 BAT, which was my second tournament. I distinctly remember gijoel666 coming up to me and expecting me to sweep my division. However, unlike Brian, there are a lot of players I have great memories of who have either passed on, are not playing as often, or have moved on to other things entirely. And for whatever reason, I have not been able to connect with the new folks that have replaced the originals. That's not just in Scrabble, but in other aspects of life as well. There was an employee who left my job last week who I had known since the beginning, and will miss dearly. Another of the "originals" will be leaving at the end of the year, and I could only think of a small handful of employees who have been at my work place longer than I have. I obviously feel fortunate to have a job, but as people around me drop out, there's this sense of loneliness that others might not experience. I still picture the scenario of finally winning the NSC 20 years from now, when none of my original friends will be around anymore, and just won't feel as good as it would now. With that said, the outlook in Scrabble looks a little hazy. I've already paid for Albany and Reno and will go to those. After that, it's not quite clear. The BAT and Nationals seem obvious, but I'm not sure about the rest. I'm starting to feel like Scrabble is something I'm doing just because I've always done it instead of something I still truly enjoy, and results have absolutely nothing to do with it. What I want to do physically doesn't match what I want to do mentally. Not sure what to make of this, except to get the most out of your friends while they're still around. |

TOOTHING definition(s)
This word is good in OWL2, though the S back hook is Collins-only. The Zyzzyva definitions given for TOOTHING are *quite* different depending on which you have set as your lexicon. |

Sunday blahs
Philadelphia tourney. Meh. It was not my day. I was not thinking well, and I probably had some tough luck too. Whatever, I was due for a reversal of fortune after the last tourney. The Giants losing to the Eagles pissed me off a lot more than this tournament did. Despite the mediocre result, there were some fun games. I thought this competitive game with dugy1001 would be a great one to annotate for the blog, until I looked at it on Quackle and saw some horrendous mistakes. Still, why spare my ego when I can give you all some laughs? The funny thing about this game is that it's got a good mix of smart plays and extremely dumb plays. Enjoy it!P.S. Congrats to key_lime_guy! |

2-letter Word Conversation
Was at the neighborhood grocery store & the cashier asked me how Scrabble is going. I said fine, was doing some studying this morning. She said, "I really should learn the list of 2's. I was playing last night & playing CA really helped." (Note, she pronounced this as SAH & spelled it out as CEE-AY.) Me: "Sorry, but CEE-AY isn't a word. There are no 2's with C or V. However, it's helpful that QI & ZA were added." Her: "Yeah, that's what I played, CEE-AY, but I have a speech impediment & can't pronounce that letter." |

another Quackle game
Awesome that jasonkb has been posting his WSC games. I'm just a tad worried that going over all these CSW games is going to mess up my TWL game. At jc3181's request, I'm continuing to post some of my TWL games against Quackle. Despite a missed opportunity for a fancy bingo, there are some instructive positions in this game. Enjoy it! |

my friend is the biggest loser
Yep - you remember I mentioned that a long-ago bandmate and friend of mine, Danny Cahill, was on the Biggest Loser. He won! Went from 430 lbs. all the way down to 191. Astonishing achievement. I had a hunch he'd go far, he's a strong-willed dude, but damn... |

SOWPODS in Phoenix
Saw something on CGP about a SOWPODS division at the February tournament. I'd been wishing that some director would do that, & if it's for real I'll probably go b/c I support integrating Collins into North American Scrabble. Hadn't been planning to go anywhere this winter. As reported on the world Scrabble listserv, after the first 3 rounds of the current tournament in Johor Bahru, Nigel was 0-3. He was beaten by Cheah, Helen, & Tim (that Minnesotan who was absurdly missing from the U.S. team). Doubt that's ever happened before. Doubt it phased him either. Jesse is in the front of the pack (!!!). |

Cleveland
Cleveland was pretty fun. ipecac_icecap & dallaswj did a standout job with this event. Good venue, efficiently run, excellent internet coverage, and everyone behaved for the most part. More people should go next time. I wish I had time to check out the city more. For now, some bingo lists, for entertainment purposes only: ( Read more... ) |

fast start/slow finish vs. slow start/fast finish
Borrowed from daltonic, as I thought it was a good question and would be curious to see more responses: What's better? A. Day 1, You win all but one game, starting off 6-1, and likely close to first place. Then, Day 2, you win the first game, but then lose 5 in a row to finish out of the money. (Final record 7-6) B. Day 1, you lose all but one game, starting off 1-6 and likely close to last place. Then, Day 2, you lose the first game, but then win 5 in a row! (Final record 6-7) Getofftheoven's answer: I'd choose A, though I suspect I might be in the minority. Yeah, it's a bummer to lose out at the end (and given many of my tournaments this year, I should know), but at least I was in contention most of the way, and that's exciting. Better to have loved and lost, etc. With B, hope has leapt out the window early, and even the late winning streak brings only relief at avoiding even worse rating damage (embarrassment?) I wonder if people's answers to this differ based on where they tend to be seeded within their division. A 1-6 first day for a low seed is rough all right, but a 1-6 first day for a high seed is catastrophic. EDIT: Also, would your answer differ if it was a round-robin instead of Swiss or something like that? |

It's about damn time http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/news/story?id=4722023Finally, the league is (hopefully) stepping up to do something about Flozell Adams's dirty tactics. Here's hoping they slap a suspension on him, which ought to be two games since he made egregiously unethical plays against the same Giants player (Tuck) in both games this year. Five digit fines just aren't going to have a big effect on pro ball players. I like how in the comments even the Cowboys fans are calling him classless and saying he needs to go. |

die Cowboy scum
Seriously though, these teams almost always play each other close, and this was yet another good game in the neverending saga. The Jints absolutely needed this win, and they need next Sunday night's game against Philly. If that happens, then the NFC East will be totally up for grabs. Stats-wise it looks like the Cowboys dominated this game, but that's pretty deceptive for a few reasons. The Giants offensive yardage doesn't include Hixon's 79 yard punt return for touchdown. Throw that in, and they were almost even with the Cowboys on yardage. Still, the 'Boys had way more time of possession and first downs. But that's because they got almost all their yardage on little plays. Whereas the Giants scoring drives were all based on big plays and zipping down the field in an instant. When you consider how many passes it took Romo to rack up those yards, suddenly it looks much less impressive. Which is not to deny that the Giants defense has looked much leakier during this season than in the last few. In other news, the Redskins just find ways to lose football games. Call them the anti-Colts. Jason Campbell had the game of his career. They caught the Saints with their pants down. And they still managed to blow it. It didn't make a difference in the end, but what was with that wacky play calling by the Saints at the end of regulation and in overtime? They kept bringing their kicker in, and then changing their minds and going for it. Just seemed like that would be a way to really disconcert your own kicker, and why in the world would you want to do that? Belichick stubbornly keeps going on fourth down, and it bites him in the ass again. The Pats lost a possession inside the Dolphins 10 yard line and went on to lose by 1. Suddenly the mediocre Dolphins and Jets are right in the playoff race. Exciting nightcap which I am not watching, though I see it's off to a close start. Ooh, another touchdown for the Cards. All of this obscures the most important event in football today. With their drubbing at home to the Eagles, the Atlanta Falcons are now 6-6 with a point differential of ZERO. They might as well have sat out the season. |
